The crime that occurs most frequently on school premises is theft. Every year, tens of thousands of dollars worth of equipment is stolen from schools. Petty theft of items such as mobile phones and wallets can cause unease and suspicion among students and staff. Often, simple security precautions could have prevented such thefts.

It's important to make sure that all entrances to the school are secure. A security guard should always be present during the day and all doors and gates should be locked at night. Windows should also be made secure. Never leave anything valuable in full view near windows at night.

Students must be responsible for their personal property at all times. Never bring valuable items to school and do not leave personal property unattended. Each student should be assigned a locker with an individual key. If bags are left in classrooms, classrooms should be kept locked during break times.

Many people come and go in schools and so proper monitoring of visitors is a very important aspect of school security. All visitors should be registered by reception staff and escorted while they are on the school premises. If an unknown person is seen on the premises, it should be reported to security immediately.

Since schools are left empty at night, it's important to have a good burglar alarm system. It's also a good idea to leave some lights on at night. This is an effective deterrent against burglars and also allows the police to see inside when it is dark.
