Hong Kong is generally a safe city and you can walk around most areas without fear. However, the risk of becoming the victim of crime exists anywhere. Pick pocketing is quite a common crime in Hong Kong, especially in crowded areas such as markets, shopping malls and the MTR. To avoid becoming the target of a pickpocket, don't carry your wallet in your back pocket and keep an eye on your backpack. Unfortunately, more violent crimes, such as mugging, do occasionally occur in Hong Kong. It's a good idea to be particularly wary in quiet areas late at night as this is when violent crime usually occurs. You can reduce the risk of such crimes by taking some simple, sensible precautions.

When you are on a bus, it is a good idea to sit next to the driver. On the train, try to avoid empty carriages. Always sit near to other people. Try not to fall asleep when travelling. It is easy for someone to take your bag or other property while you are sleeping.

When you are driving alone, keep to main roads where possible. Keep a mobile phone on you so you can call for help in the event of a breakdown. Always park in well-lit areas and never leave any valuables on display inside your car. Always lock your car when you get out. You'd be surprised how many people forget to do this!

You should always be alert when walking alone and keep to well-lit streets. Walk facing oncoming traffic and keep away from alleys and doorways. Try not to enter a lift with strangers. Cover up expensive jewellery and avoid carrying large sums of cash. Hold onto your bag tightly or keep it tucked under your arm.
