Book of the month

This month, we¡¦re reviewing Striker, a story about a football game that ends in court.

Title:

Striker

Author:

Peter and Karen Viney

Genre: Drama

Synopsis:

This story takes place in a courtroom. The reader acts as a member of the jury and, in front of a judge, we find out through different witnesses exactly what happened in the case.

In the last few minutes of an important football game, with the scores at 1-1, the goalkeeper fouls a striker in the penalty area. The striker then kicks the goalkeeper in the face, and the goalkeeper becomes permanently blind. The goalkeeper is now suing the striker for twenty million pounds compensation for pain and his lost job. The aim of the court case is to decide whether it was simply an accident and part of the game, or if the striker is responsible for the goalkeeper¡¦s injury. The play ends as the jury leaves the courtroom to decide whether it was deliberate or accidental. The reader must decide the ending for themselves, based on the evidence they have read.

Review:
We chose this book because it is an interesting story and because it asks the important question of whether someone is to blame for an accidental injury. It is a sad story as the goalkeeper has lost his eyesight and his career is over. No amount of money will change that. However, sometimes, especially in sport, accidents happen and people are hurt. This book is good because you do not need to understand football to enjoy the story. It also shows what it is like to be part of a court case.

In the end, the writers let the reader decide what he/she thinks based on all the evidence. This is unusual as the writer usually decides the ending. At the very end, after the reader has decided, the writers give their opinion as to whose side they are on. However this does not mean that either answer is incorrect.
